Who we are

We are believers in the power of research

CAFRI is a social enterprise seeking to eradicate African hunger through research. It provides a platform for collaborative research, knowledge sharing, and networking among African food researchers.

The African population is expected to reach 2.5 billion by 2050, which means more mouths to feed.

For Africa to be positioned to feed these people and play a significant role in the global food system without harming the environment, targeted and collaborative research on African food products, demand-driven innovation, and the use of emerging technology in the food system must accelerate.

Think of CAFRI as the platform to make this happen, focusing on innovation, artificial intelligence, market insight, and environmental sustainability.

A food solutions for African by Africans

Beyond the farm  –
A Holistic Approach

Many interventions to improve the African Food system focus mainly on enhancing farming output and farmers while doing little or nothing for the post-farm components such as food product development, manufacturing, and other related areas.

However, if Africa is to successfully feed the 25% of the world population that would reside in it by 2050 and compete favourably in the global food market, we need a more comprehensive approach. The Centre for African Food Research and Innovation, CAFRI, is bridging this gap.

Our scorecard for
Transformation

As we strive to make a positive impact on the food system, we recognize the importance of focusing our efforts where we can be most effective. We have identified four areas where we have the greatest strengths and potential for strategic impact. These areas are our laser-focused priorities.

  • Food Innovation 88% 88%
  • AI in Food System 65% 65%
  • Consumer Insight 75% 75%
  • Environmental Sustainability 90% 90%
